Six Great Directors Who Changed Movie History

From Hitchcock to Spielberg, we explore the careers and the iconic films that made these directors influential and famous. 

  • Week 1 – the career of Frank Capra, who brought social consciousness to his movies during the 1930’s
  • Week 2 – Alfred Hitchcock’s mastery of iconic filmmaking style
  • Week 3 – Billy Wilder – the screenwriter turned director who explored many genres and created the adult comedy in the 1960’s
  • Week 4 – Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish writer-director who opened the American movie audience to foreign film, and a major influence on Woody Allen
  • Week 5 – Federico Fellini, the Italian director who broke taboos with landmark films such as La Dolce Vita
  • Week 6 – Steven Spielberg, the king of modern Hollywood who created the summer blockbuster with Jaws and dominated the business with blockbusters and serious dramas, including Schindler’s List

Joe Meyers earned his BA from Penn State, with a major in journalism and minor in film. He is currently Director of Programming for the Focus on French Cinema Film Festival in Connecticut and is co-host of the Spotify podcast ‘Now a Major Motion Picture!’ Meyers has written about movies, theater and books for more than 30 years for the Hearst Connecticut Media Group and other publications. In the 1970s, Meyers ran the first (and only) art house on the Delmarva Peninsula—the Lewes Cinema. In 2012, the Mystery Writers of America awarded Meyers the Ellery Queen Award for his writing on crime fiction.
