Highlighted Artists of MoMA

Zoom – Tuesday 10:10 am – 11:50 am

March 12, 19, 26 April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

To better understand the thrust of the 1929 new Museum of Modern Art collection, we explore prominent works of art of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Recognizing the impact of world events of that time helps to illuminate our understanding of the artists’ points of view and thought processes. As 20th century people, join us to explore what prompted the art and deepen our understanding of it.

  • Week 1- How it began in 1929 – Cezanne, Gauguin, Seurat, Van Gogh – revolutionary breakthroughs in art
  • Week 2 – Picasso and Rousseau – friends or foes?
  • Week 3 – German Expressionism and Vienna – the break with tradition
  • Week 4 – Rupture of World War I – artists confront war and violence
  • Week 5 – 1930’s and 1940’s Civil Rights frustration – Lawrence and Catlett
