Chagall and Dali explored the worlds of dreams. Both similarities and profound differences in approaches and attitudes underpin the foundation for their works. The individual artist allows us into a very private space of his imagination. This course also includes other artists of the period. We consider why Chagall never became a part of the Surrealist group, and the origins of his unique dream memories.  Join me for a thrilling deep dive into their worlds.

  • Week 1: Chagall and Dali – understanding their motivations
  • Week 2: Chagall – early life and challenges of prejudice and wars
  • Week 3: Chagall – a deeper understanding of his profound symbolism in dreams
  • Week 4: Chagall – long life and broad view of humanity viewed through his art
  • Week 5: Dali – early life, education, and family
  • Week 6: Dali – artists who shared a point of view of Surrealism
  • Week 7: Dali – influence on the world, use of the bizarre
  • Week 8: Wrap up – compare and contrast the two artists and their works and influence

May include some material from a previous course.
