REGISTRATION IS CLOSED American art captured its heroes and demons and landscapes of drama and magnificence. Culturally, politically and religiously we follow America’s growth including civil strife and expansion.  Regionalists give way to the wave of European immigrants, their sophistication and worldview.  Come have fun and explore.

Week 1: Early American Art – North and South Limners and Portrait artists Copley, Stuart, West

Week 2: Civil War art and photography Woodville, Currier and Ives and Brady

Week 3: Westward Ho – Cowboys and Indians Remington, Russel. Focus on wilderness-Hudson River Valley, Cole, Innes and Bierstadt

Week 4: Independent artists – Homer and Eakins AND Early 20th c. exploration of our diversity WPA and Harlem Renaissance

Week 5: Influence of Spanish Colonial art and architecture

Week 6: Modern and Regionalists Stieglitz, O’Keefe, Benton

Week 7: Immigrants Gorky, de Kooning, Rothko, and European artist.

Week 8: Illustration Rockwell and Pop Art

Darby Cartun earned a BS from Syracuse University and MAT from Sacred Heart University.  She hosts a talk show Monday through Friday on 149 WGCH 12:30-1:00 and is a passionate art lover.
