We trace the development of America in the 19th century from a second-rate power, politically and economically, to the point at which it was the most powerful nation in the world.  At the same time, we look at the decline of some of the former major powers of Europe and the conflicts that led to American growth as well as other shifting world phenomena.

Stephen Balser has earned degrees and completed course work at Syracuse University, Wesleyan University, Johns Hopkins University, Williams College and Trinity College at Cambridge University in the UK.  This is his 51st year of teaching history at the secondary and college level.
