Lifetime Learners Goes Online

Remote learning will connect us all in these challenging times.

Shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to cancel all classes and events this spring, our Board of Directors sprang into action. Realizing that remote learning might quickly become our only option, we put together a weekly pilot program of online classes and social events on Zoom.

Zoom is an amazing tool for online learning!  In these socially isolated times, it has become indispensable for connecting people and creating virtual classrooms. But would our instructors and members be able to handle the technical side of Zoom?

Taking a virtual class is virtually effortless!

Fortunately, quite a few of our members were already familiar with Zoom, from online family gatherings and work meetings. For those who were not familiar, Sandi Sacks, Cathy Diamond and Patty Schlegel organized and hosted Zoom training sessions.

Yes, there was a learning curve for EVERYONE. But everyone did phenomenally well!  Members have found it’s easier than they thought to attend a Lifetime Learners Zoom session. All you need is a smart phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.  You can even connect from a regular phone (audio only).

Online learning is fun!

Soon after our training classes in May, we began our pilot program of two Zoom meetings per week.

“There’s something for everybody,” says Sandi. On Tuesdays she co-hosted Coffee & Conversation. This  online gathering had a ‘getting to know each other’ format.  “Every week I posed intriguing conversation starters such as ‘What advice would you give to your younger self?'” Her questions always sparked lively discussions and drew surprising comments ranging from the profound to the hilarious.

On every Wednesday, a different online class was presented by an LLI instructor.

“Each class was a one-shot,” Sandi said. “Classes covered a full array of subjects, and were taught by some of our most popular instructors. Some were lecture style. Others were very interactive. All were highly engaging!”

Our summer Zoom pilot program was a success.

Thanks to the tireless training and hosting skills of our online learning team, our Zoom online pilot has been very well-received. Here’s what some of our members had to say after participating:

“Lifetime Learners Online is definitely the highlight of my week!” – Gladys Goldberg

“It’s great to see so many familiar faces online.” – Cheryl Izzo

“As good as being there!” – Gary Lishnoff

Haven’t had the chance to sample our Zoom classes?

There’s one more left this summer! On Wednesday Aug 5th at  2:00 PM, Mark Albertson will offer a taste of his upcoming fall Current Events* class.  In today’s environment, there’s no shortage of hot topics to discuss! Also, for those of you who haven’t learned to Zoom yet, or need a refresher, you can still attend training sessions this month: Intro to Zoom* –  Tuesday, July 21st, and Intermediate Zoom Training* – Wednesday, July 22nd. Soon you’ll be Zooming like a pro! **
